CEBU, PHILIPPINES --- Dragon Boat Racing, a sport not inherently original here in the Philippines, had taken Cebu and entire Visayas with piqued interest.
Being in a archiepelagic setting, Cebu, as well as other provinces in the Visayas Region, had been strategic places to cultivate the sport due to an abundance of open seas.
Due to this, HABAGAT Outdoor Equipment, in its mission to advance the outdoor lifestyle, formed Gruppo HABAGAT, it's first and very own Dragon Boat Team dedicated to raise the awareness of Cebu being a breeding ground of worthy athletes in the Dragon Boat scene.
The team was composed of HABAGAT employees through the leadership of Mr. Randy Su, HABAGAT proprietor and also, co founder of the Cebu Dragon Boat Association.
Last May 22, 2015, Gruppo HABAGAT embarked on their first Dragon Boat race in Polambato Wharf, Bogo City against contenders from Bogo and Bohol.
The Bohol Paddlers’ Association (BPA) Team A ruled the 200-meter Dragon boat exhibition matches last Saturday at the Polambato Wharf in Bogo City.
BPA-A won the exhibition match in 50.84 seconds, beating Team Bogo (52.07) in the finals. Cebu City’s Grupo Habagat failed to make the finals after losing the semifinals to Bogo, finishing in 55.88 seconds to Bogo’s 54.33.
Cebu Dragon Boat Association founder Retired General Carlos Holganza, expressed his satisfaction on the event turn out. He and the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission are discussing plans for another friendly dragon boat competition about two months from the race day in Southern Cebu.
This only proves that Cebu and the rest of the provinces can raise the bar of excellence and can definitely compete with other places.
